Our Library Online

In general I’m quite relaxed about most things. Maybe even a bit too relaxed. But when it comes to books I’m some sort of a freakish perfectionist. Both at work and at home.

When I was a kid I started a classifying system for my small but precious library with codes on stickers – some of our books still bear the scars!

So the moment I had a computer I tried to make a catalogue with all my books. I did that with pre-Office software on my first Olivetti and later I did a more serious attempt in Excel.

But although I put a lot of time in it – and even Mush spent some long afternoon keying in book data – I was never really satisfied.

Later I found a library software but that was even worse than my homemade Excel template.

I almost gave up. Almost.

Till…

Mush who saw my pains and suffering gave me this link to LibraryThing!

This is the site that I have been waiting for!

I started to put all our books in our catalogue and I am well over 1000 entries now. But I slowed down now because after some wild and untamed typing and searching in their database my book perfectionism brought me down to earth… the data is too sloppy. LibraryThing offers so many fields: the ordinary title, author, etc. ones but also labeling, rating, date of purchase, reading, etc.

Well, anyhow a paradise for booklovers since you can compare your library with others, find new books and make new friends.

Of course there some minor flaws but in fact there’s only one downside: it is so addictive.

Mush regrets she ever gave me the site and I spend 99% of my (home) computer time on LibraryThing. And it won’t change after I key in all the books, all the dates, ratings and all publishers… then starts the reviewing and I found out I still got a lot of books on the shelves I didn’t read or didn’t finish.

I need an early retirement. Today. Tomorrow at the latest ; )

I never knew there was someone in this world so into books tagging and cataloguing. I once thought that people who were interested in the physical aspects of books (other than the books' contents) was limited to the Library Science students. Interested in cataloguing all my Auditing books?!!
